About this postcard
A broad, tree-lined boulevard runs along the Lake Michigan shore in Lincoln Park, with an open red touring car and a horse-drawn carriage sharing the roadway. Pedestrians and picnickers dot the grass and the lakefront promenade. Lincoln Park grew out of the grounds of the old city cemetery in the 1860s and became Chicago's first public park, a long green strip on the north side. By the time this card was printed, Lake Shore Drive was a favored pleasure route linking the park to the downtown lakefront, and the mix of automobiles and carriages on the road showed how quickly the motorcar was taking over.
