About this postcard
A broad, tree-lined boulevard — Lake Shore Drive — sweeps along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago's Lincoln Park, with an open red touring car and a horse-drawn carriage sharing the roadway while pedestrians and picnickers dot the grass and the lakefront promenade. Lincoln Park, established in the 1860s on the city's north side, was Chicago's first public park and by the early 20th century Lake Shore Drive had become a favored pleasure route linking it to the downtown lakefront. The scene captures the transitional traffic of the era, when automobiles and carriages still shared the same road.
