About this postcard

The word DES MOINES fills the card in large block letters, each letter filled with a different city landmark. The printed key identifies Bankers Life Company, the Equitable Life of Iowa Building, the Iowa State Historical Building, the Main Building at Drake University, the Des Moines Building, the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument, Hotel Fort Des Moines, the Telephone Building, and the Coliseum, with the Iowa State Capitol at the bottom. The mix gives Des Moines a civic face: state government, insurance companies, a university, a hotel, and a monument to soldiers and sailors. Large-letter greetings were a popular souvenir format in the early twentieth century, and this one presents the city as a modern capital and regional insurance center.
