About this postcard
The card spells LAWRENCE in large block letters, each filled with a small view of the town: a domed courthouse-like building, a bridge over the Kansas (Kaw) River, campus structures, and a tower. The letters sit over a red-brick-textured oval, and the printed caption calls Lawrence the "Home of State University" of Kansas. Lawrence was founded in 1854 by New England emigrant-aid settlers and became a free-state stronghold before the Civil War. The University of Kansas opened there in 1866 on Mount Oread, and the campus has shaped the town's identity ever since.
