Large-letter "Greetings from San Francisco" card, San Francisco, California, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A large-letter greeting card spells out "SAN FRANCISCO" in bold three-dimensional block letters, each letter filled with a small view of a local landmark — among them the Ferry Building tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, City Hall and the Palace of Fine Arts — with "Greetings from" in script above and "CALIF." in red below. The background is a stylized blue-and-yellow pattern suggesting the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge. Large-letter cards of this style were a staple of mid-century American tourist souvenir publishing, and the scenes chosen here highlight the city's best-known landmarks of the 1930s–40s.
