Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Onyx Cave, Mammoth Cave, KY, 1936

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Colorized view of a tall stalagmite in Great Onyx Cave, its stacked, tilted profile compared in the printed caption to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Smaller stalactites and stalagmites fill the background. The cave was a privately operated show cave near Mammoth Cave, and the caption places it "Within the Boundary of Mammoth Cave National Park." The park was authorized in 1926 but not established until 1941, so the boundary language reflects the authorized park area rather than a fully assembled national park. Visitors in the 1930s could tour commercial caves in the Mammoth Cave region.
