Lee Highway and Shenandoah National Park, Page County, VA, circa 1935

About this postcard

A paved two-lane highway runs through a broad valley in Page County, Virginia, with a split-rail fence and a small roadside sign at right. Wooded ridges fade toward the Blue Ridge in the distance. The caption names the road as the Lee Highway, an early auto trail through the Shenandoah Valley that was later largely incorporated into US Route 11, and ties the view to Shenandoah National Park. The park was established in 1935, and its Skyline Drive, built with Civilian Conservation Corps labor, helped make the Blue Ridge a popular motoring destination in the 1930s.
