Lee Highway approaching Skyline Drive, Luray, VA, circa 1935

Card type

About this postcard

A winding road, the Lee Highway, runs through wooded Blue Ridge foothills toward the Skyline Drive. Farm clearings and scattered houses sit among the trees below. The caption places the scene on U.S. 211 east of Luray, near the Lee Highway entrance to Skyline Drive in the center of Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive was built in the 1930s as the park's scenic crest road, and the Lee Highway carried motorists through the Shenandoah Valley as one of the country's early transcontinental auto routes. The view shows the mountains as a motor-touring destination.
