Lee Highway approaching Skyline Drive, Virginia, circa 1935

About this postcard

An elevated view looks down on the winding Lee Highway as it climbs through wooded green hills toward the crest where it meets Skyline Drive in western Virginia. The Lee Highway (today's U.S. Route 11 corridor) was a named early auto trail, and Skyline Drive, built in the 1930s along the Blue Ridge, became the scenic spine of Shenandoah National Park. The card's linen-era coloring and the small farmsteads in the valley below typify tourist views of the new mountain park.
