Letter from Lavila to Joe Province, Fraser, MI, 1940

About this postcard

Lavila writes to Joe Province in Shinnston, West Virginia, from Fraser, Michigan, on the last day of May 1940. The note describes a wet, cold drive: rain every minute of the day, a father who had to stop for gas every 40 or 50 miles, and an arrival home around 10:30. A furnace fire built with papers and kindling took the chill off, and the writer, who had brought no coat, made do with a couple of sweaters. The card is a used 1-cent Jefferson government postal card cancelled at Fraser, Michigan; Lavila signs off with plans to go downtown to Detroit.

May 31, 1940 Dear Joe, It's as cold as "blue blazes" and I didn't bring a coat with me. I have a couple of sweaters though. He didn't drive over an inch of dry pavement and it rained every minute of the day. Dad went dry every 40 or 50 miles and we had to stop and let him tank up so we didn't get home until about 10:30. Dad built a fire in the furnace with papers and kindle took the chill off. We're going downtown (Detroit) in a minute so - So long. Lavila
