An elevated view looks down on the Lewiston Spiral Highway as it folds back on itself across steep, barren hills above Lewiston, Idaho. The dirt road climbs in switchbacks toward the horizon, with cut banks and sparse vegetation marking the grade. The route runs ten miles from Lewiston to its apex and rises 2,000 feet, promoted as "the scenic roadway of the west." Now called the Old Spiral Highway, it was an early motor road out of the Snake River valley, and its many curves made the climb a local landmark.
