Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., 1928
About this postcard
The Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building stands behind lawns and trees in a view from the Capitol, its classical facade lined with arched and rectangular windows and the city beyond. The dome and lantern are finished in black copper, with gilded panels and a gilded finial representing the torch of Science. Completed in 1897 at a reported cost of $6,000,000, the Beaux-Arts building was the national library's main home and a centerpiece of Washington's monumental architecture. A traveler on a trip through New York toward Niagara Falls wrote that it was "a most beautiful building inside."
