About this postcard

The portrait shows Lieutenant General Alexander Campbell in a red military coat with gold epaulettes and dark facings, a white waistcoat and cravat, and powdered hair. He stands against a mottled brown background, holding a glove or sword hilt in his left hand. Sir Henry Raeburn painted the likeness; the painting is in the North Carolina Museum of Art. Raeburn was Edinburgh's leading portraitist in the early 19th century, and the sitter's powdered hair and epauletted coat place him in the British Army at the turn of the 19th century.
