A spray of lily of the valley — white bell-shaped blossoms with orange-tinted throats, buds and broad green leaves — is centered against a pink shield-shaped panel, with small purple violets in the corners and the greeting "Happy Birthday." lettered below in ornamental script. Floral birthday greetings of this kind were a staple of the early twentieth-century postcard boom, when publishers in Germany and the United States turned out embossed lithographic cards for every occasion.
