Lily ponds in bloom, Tower Grove Park, St. Louis, MO, 1945

About this postcard

The water-lily ponds at Tower Grove Park in St. Louis are in bloom, with pads and yellow and pink blossoms covering the still water. Flower beds and shrubs line the banks, and a long glasshouse range with a tall brick chimney rises behind the trees. Henry Shaw gave the land for the park in the late 1860s; it was laid out in the English park style beside his Missouri Botanical Garden, and its rare trees, cultivated shrubs, and lily ponds made it a horticultural destination. The blooming ponds were promoted as one of the park's most beautiful sights.
