Lincoln Memorial and cherry blossoms, Washington, D.C., circa 1940

About this postcard

Pink cherry blossoms frame a view across the Tidal Basin toward the Lincoln Memorial, whose white colonnade and steps rise behind a band of green trees and a low shoreline. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon and dedicated in 1922, honors Abraham Lincoln with Daniel Chester French's seated statue in the central chamber. The Japanese flowering cherries along the Tidal Basin, a gift from Tokyo in 1912, have made this spring view one of Washington's signature scenes.
