The Lincoln Memorial stands in Potomac Park on the banks of the Potomac River, seen here across the Tidal Basin. Its white Doric colonnade and steps are mirrored in the still water, with a row of Japanese cherry trees in bloom along the far bank. Completed in 1922, the memorial was designed by Henry Bacon and holds Daniel Chester French's seated statue of Lincoln. The cherry trees were a gift from Tokyo when Yukio Ozaki was mayor, and their spring bloom made the Tidal Basin a noted seasonal sight.
