About this postcard
The seated Lincoln by Daniel Chester French fills the view, hands resting on the chair arms, the coat and trousers cut in deep folds. Behind him the memorial's south wall carries the Gettysburg Address in carved letters, the text the card's caption calls attention to. French's 19-foot figure was carved from Georgia marble and dedicated when the memorial opened in 1922. By the time this color view was printed, the temple on the Potomac's edge had become one of the most photographed stops in Washington.
