Lincoln Memorial with cherry blossoms reflected in the Potomac River, Washington, D.C., circa 1940

About this postcard

The Lincoln Memorial stands as a white colonnaded temple at the end of the Reflecting Pool, framed by dark trees and a row of pink cherry blossoms along the far bank, with the whole scene mirrored in the still water in the foreground. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon and dedicated in 1922, honors Abraham Lincoln with Daniel Chester French's seated statue inside its 36-column peristyle. The Japanese flowering cherries along the Tidal Basin and Potomac were a gift from Tokyo in 1912 and have drawn spring visitors ever since.
