About this postcard
The Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois, stands in Oak Ridge Cemetery with its 117-foot obelisk rising from a 70-foot-square base. An American flag flies at right, and trees frame the monument at sunset. Designed by sculptor Larkin Goldsmith Mead, the tomb was completed in 1871 and dedicated in 1874. It holds Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their sons. A bronze statue of Lincoln crowns the shaft, and military and allegorical figures ring the base. A 1931 appropriation of $175,000 funded a major rebuilding of the structure. The card was sent by a Lincolniana collector in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, who used it to solicit sales and exchanges of Lincoln postcards.
