About this postcard

The cenotaph of Abraham Lincoln in the burial room of his tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. The marble block, inscribed with his name and dates, stands among floral wreaths on wire stands beneath the arched ceiling, ringed by state flags. The flags mark the states where generations of the Lincoln family lived, from Massachusetts and New Jersey through Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana to Illinois, where the family settled in 1830. The tomb was dedicated in 1874, and Lincoln's remains lie in a vault below the burial room floor, with the cenotaph above as the marker visitors file past.
