Looking down river from the Hawk's Bill, Lower Dells, WI, 1952

Real photo

About this postcard

The view looks down the Wisconsin River from a ledge at Hawk's Bill, a rock formation in the Lower Dells. An open excursion launch with passengers runs the channel below, and the water mirrors the wooded banks and the layered sandstone cliffs that give the Dells their name. By the early 1950s the Dells were a long-established summer resort, and sightseeing boats had carried visitors through the narrows for generations. The Brown Studio credit marks the image as local commercial work made for the tourist trade.
