Looking east from Vista House, Columbia River, Oregon, circa 1918

Card type
Real photo

About this postcard

Elevated view east from the stone balustrade at Vista House, looking down the Columbia River Gorge. The broad river curves between forested hills and bluffs, with a wooded island and lowlands in the middle distance and a sandy shoreline along the near bank. Vista House, the stone observatory at Crown Point, was built as a rest stop on the Columbia River Highway and opened in 1918. The highway was promoted as a scenic drive through the gorge, and the view shows the river, wooded slopes, and open water that made the route a destination.
