Looking south along the lakefront, Chicago, Illinois, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

An elevated view looking south over Chicago's lakefront, with Grant Park's green lawns and Buckingham Fountain's spray in the middle distance, Lake Michigan and its breakwaters beyond, and a dense wall of skyscrapers along Michigan Avenue in the foreground. The tall gabled tower at center is the Wrigley Building complex, with the white mass of the Chicago Tribune Tower area and other 1920s office blocks to the right. Grant Park, laid out on landfill after the 1871 fire, remains Chicago's principal downtown lakefront park, and the fountain visible here was dedicated in 1927.
