The view looks south from the ramparts of Fortress Monroe across a long wooden bridge or walkway over the water. Figures in suits and hats walk toward the viewer; the sender calls them boys carrying boxes of flowers. Behind them are red brick buildings, a Gothic-style church, lawns, and trees. Fortress Monroe was a moat-ringed Army post at Old Point Comfort on Hampton Roads, long a landmark and active military installation. The sender's note about picking up shells on the beach fits the fort's waterfront setting.
