About this postcard

A crowded wooden pier stretches toward the shore at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, with bathers and strollers lining the railing and a red-and-blue canopied pavilion at right; beyond the sand rise the resort's amusements, including a large wooden roller coaster, red-roofed pavilions and a lattice observation tower. Old Orchard Beach developed in the late 19th century as one of New England's premier seaside resorts, served by the Boston & Maine Railroad, and its pier and beachfront amusement district drew large summer crowds through the mid-20th century. The caption identifies the view as looking west from the pier toward the shorefront.
