About this postcard
From the Mount Royal Lookout, a stone balustrade frames a wide view over Montreal. A horse-drawn hansom and pedestrians occupy the overlook, while the city stretches beyond in distinct bands: industrial works along the Lachine Canal, the department stores and skyscrapers of downtown, leafy suburbs, church spires, and public squares. The St. Lawrence River closes the horizon. The caption describes the lookout as more than 650 feet above the river and points visitors to the nearby Chalet for refreshments. In the late 1920s, Montreal was Canada's largest city and a major industrial and financial center, and hansom cabs were a common way to climb the tree-lined road through Mount Royal Park.
