A small wooden lookout house with a hipped roof and many windows sits on the rocky summit of Harney Peak. Several men in early 20th-century clothing stand on the surrounding rocks, one climbing at left. The peak, now Black Elk Peak, is the highest point in South Dakota and rises in the Black Hills. Its exposed summit made it a natural site for fire detection, and the wooden lookout shown here predates the stone tower later built there.
