Louisiana State Capitol and Huey P. Long Bridge, LA, 1936

About this postcard

The Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge appears at left, with the Huey P. Long Bridge at New Orleans at right and an oval portrait of Long below. The caption calls the two structures "Louisiana's Two Greatest Monuments," both conceived and built by the late U.S. Senator Huey P. Long. Long had been shot inside the Capitol in September 1935 and died two days later; the bridge, opened later that year, was named for him. The Capitol's 34 floors and 450-foot height made it the tallest building in the South, while the bridge's 4.4-mile length and 409-foot central pier made it a prominent Mississippi River crossing.
