About this postcard
The view looks across the New Orleans waterfront at Lugger Landing, where a plank wharf is crowded with dock workers and fishermen. A fleet of sailing luggers lies moored side by side, their tall masts and furled sails rising against the sky. These shallow-draft boats worked the oyster beds of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne, and the Mississippi Sound and landed their catch at wharves along the riverfront and lakefront. The sender's note mentions coming to New Orleans for the fete and Mardi Gras, placing the waterfront scene in the city's carnival season. The mention of flowers in bloom fits New Orleans's mild late-winter climate, when visitors from colder cities came south for Carnival and for their health.
