Lugger Landing, New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1901

About this postcard

The view shows the Lugger Landing on the New Orleans waterfront: a plank wharf crowded with dock workers and fishermen, with a fleet of sailing luggers — the shallow-draft oyster boats of the Louisiana coast — moored side by side, their tall masts and furled sails rising against the sky. Luggers like these worked the oyster beds of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borgne and the Mississippi Sound and landed their catch at wharves along the New Orleans riverfront and lakefront. The card is a color print made from a photograph by the Detroit Photographic Co., issued in 1901.
