About this postcard

The Lutheran Deaconess Motherhood on West North Avenue in Baltimore appears as a large stone institutional building with a central gabled entrance and a ground-floor arcade of arched openings, set behind a broad lawn. A crowd of men and women in early-1900s dress, many of them in white, gathers along the front, with tall evergreens at the right. The motherhouse was home to a Lutheran community of deaconesses, women who trained for nursing, teaching, and parish work, and the gathering suggests an occasion that brought residents and visitors together.
