Luxembourg-Grund and Ville Haute, Luxembourg, 1956

About this postcard

A view across the Alzette valley in Luxembourg: the lower town of Grund sits among trees along the river, while the upper town's roofs, church spires, and stone ramparts rise on the plateau above. A masonry viaduct crosses the valley at the right. The Grund grew below the Bock promontory, and the walls and casemates visible here are what remain of Luxembourg's old fortress, most of which was dismantled after the 1867 Treaty of London. The sender's note treats the Grand Duchy as a quick stop on a fast tour, sizing it up as a country of "40 X 60 miles and 300,000 population" before lunch and the onward ride to Weisbaden (likely Wiesbaden).
