About this postcard

The printed caption identifies the scene as "The modern city of Lynchburg in the heart of Virginia," viewed from Madison Heights across the James River. The vantage point sits on the Amherst County bank, looking back at the city on its hills. Lynchburg grew as a tobacco market and river town in the Virginia Piedmont, and the ridges that shape its streets earned it the nickname the City of Seven Hills. Madison Heights, a separate community on the north side of the James, gave photographers a raised view over the river toward the downtown blocks.
