About this postcard

Madame John's Legacy stands in the French Quarter as a red brick house with a two-story gallery of green wooden posts, railings, and shutters. Ferns hang from the gallery, a lantern is mounted nearby, and tall shuttered openings line the ground floor. The card identifies it as the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley and links it to Washington Cable's Creole stories. According to the caption, Captain Jean Pascal, its first owner, came to New Orleans in 1726 and lived here until he was killed in the Indian massacre of 1729.
