The Madison Street bridge is closed to river traffic, its steel truss span and railings crowded with pedestrians and vehicles crossing the Chicago River. A small vessel and a lumber-laden barge wait in the water below, with a large commercial block and smokestacks rising behind. Chicago's downtown river crossings were swing and bascule bridges that opened constantly for lake and river shipping, and Madison Street was one of the busiest of these crossings in the early 20th century.
