About this postcard
View across the Main Entrance Hall of the White House, looking toward a doorway crowned by the presidential seal, with tall fluted columns, cut-glass chandeliers, gilt torchères, potted palms and a red carpet over a patterned parquet floor. The caption calls the mansion the oldest public structure in Washington and a "perfect example of the late Eighteenth Century Renaissance," wording that likely points to the neoclassical style James Hoban gave the building before it was first occupied in 1800. Public tours of the Executive Mansion passed through this hall, and the sender's note of a quick flight down and back within the same week fits the postwar years, when air travel put Washington within easy reach of Midwestern visitors.
