About this postcard
A tinted view across the tree-shaded walks of Main Plaza toward the red-roofed Bexar County Courthouse, its tall Romanesque tower with a conical cap rising above palms and broadleaf trees. A few horse-drawn rigs stand in the plaza. James Riely Gordon designed the courthouse, completed in 1896, and it remains a landmark of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in Texas. Main Plaza was laid out in the eighteenth century as the center of the Spanish colonial town, with San Fernando Cathedral facing it, and by the time this card was mailed it sat in the middle of a busy commercial downtown.
