Main Spillway, Bonneville Dam, Oregon, 1947

About this postcard

Water pours through the open bays of the main spillway at Bonneville Dam, breaking white between the concrete piers, with a forested ridge and low cloud behind. The dam crosses the Columbia River east of Portland, built by the Army Corps of Engineers and completed in the late 1930s as one of the large federal public-works projects of the Depression era. Its spillway gates pass flows the powerhouse does not take, so the view shows the river at a heavy release rather than the usual generating flow.
