A view of a Louisville street corner as it appeared in 1850, with brick commercial buildings lining Main Street and Third Street. A horse-drawn streetcar with a driver stands in the foreground, and a team of horses pulls a wagon along the unpaved street. The Galt House name is lettered on a building at right. Louisville was a busy Ohio River port in the decade before the Civil War, and Main Street was the center of its wholesale and retail trade. The Galt House was a well-known hotel of the period.
