About this postcard
A busy downtown Buffalo street scene looking north along Main Street from Erie Street, with trolley cars on the tracks, crowds of pedestrians in period dress, and commercial blocks plastered with painted signs for the Iroquois Hotel, Golden Grain Whiskey, a photographer, and a drug company. Main Street was Buffalo's principal commercial artery in the early 20th century, lined with hotels, dry-goods houses, and theaters, and crisscrossed by an extensive streetcar network. The tall dark "Iroquois" buildings visible here belong to the era before the street's later skyscraper redevelopment.
