About this postcard
The view looks north along Main Street from Lafayette Square in Buffalo. A large mansard-roofed commercial block fills the center of the frame, with streetcars, horse-drawn carriages, and pedestrians sharing the roadway. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands at right. Lafayette Square was a civic gathering place, and the monument, dedicated in 1884, honors Buffalo's Civil War soldiers and sailors. Main Street was the city's commercial spine in the early 1900s, with trolley lines and delivery wagons mixing with foot traffic.
