Main Street looking north, Winnipeg, Manitoba, 1909

About this postcard

The view looks north along Main Street in Winnipeg, with streetcars, horse-drawn wagons, and pedestrians sharing the broad roadway. Commercial blocks line both sides, including signs for W. Johnstone Co. Wholesale Implements and Stuart Machinery Co., and the street runs toward a grid of houses stretching to the horizon. Winnipeg was then a fast-growing prairie gateway and wholesale center, and Main Street carried both local traffic and goods bound for farms and towns across western Canada. The mix of electric streetcars and horse-drawn wagons reflects a city in transition in the early 1900s.
