About this postcard
The printed caption identifies the view as Main Street looking south in Amherst, Virginia. The street runs wide and unpaved between two- and three-story brick and frame commercial buildings, with early automobiles and a few horse-drawn rigs parked along the curbs. Utility poles and wires lead toward a distant tree and building at the vanishing point. Amherst was the seat of Amherst County, and its Main Street served as the commercial center for the surrounding farming community. The mix of horse traffic and automobiles places the scene in the years when motor cars were becoming common in small-town Virginia.
