Mammoth Hot Springs terraces and valley, Yellowstone National Park, circa 1915

Card type
Printed photo

About this postcard

View from the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs looking down over the white, mineral-crusted basins toward the green valley floor, where the buildings of the Mammoth Hot Springs settlement and Fort Yellowstone stand at the foot of the wooded hills. The caption names the scene as Mammoth Hot Springs Valley from the terraces in Yellowstone National Park. Mammoth Hot Springs was the park's administrative headquarters, guarded by the U.S. Army at Fort Yellowstone from 1886 until the National Park Service took over in 1916, and the terraces themselves are among the park's best-known thermal features. The imprint 'Haynes' refers to F. Jay Haynes, the official park photographer whose studio and picture shops supplied views of Yellowstone.
