About this postcard
A man in a suit and bowler hat helps a woman in a wide Merry Widow hat step into an early open-sided limousine while a chauffeur sits at the wheel. The printed verse reads, "He had planned a charming ride / In the Limousine, at that, / But hang the luck, he quite forgot / That MERRY WIDOW HAT." The broad-brimmed Merry Widow hat, popular after the 1907 operetta, was a common subject for comic postcards. In 1908, a limousine was still a chauffeur-driven car tied to wealth, so a hat too large for the outing made an easy social comedy.
