Man on a donkey before a log cabin, Ozark, AR, 1906

About this postcard

A man in a dark suit, tie, and bowler hat sits astride a donkey in front of a rough log cabin built of unpeeled logs. The white-lettered caption on the print, "WHICH IS ARTHUR," leaves the joke open: the rider or the donkey. The man's town clothes against the crude outbuilding carry most of the humor, and the print itself is heavily toned and stained. Real-photo cards were made in small batches by local photographers, often as souvenirs or jokes shared between neighbors, and this one traveled through the Ozarks in the spring of 1906. Ozark, the seat of Franklin County, was a small river town, and rural free delivery routes were still a fairly recent arrival in the surrounding hills, carrying mail out to farms off the main roads.
