Man walking a dachshund in a snowstorm, Christmas greeting card, circa 1908

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

A bundled-up man in a long coat, green hat and red scarf leans on a walking stick as he trudges through a heavy snowstorm, a dachshund at his heels and a small snow-dusted evergreen with red berries at the left; a snow-covered house and rail fence fade into the squall behind him. The greeting 'A MERRY CHRISTMAS.' is printed in gold across the bottom. Such illustrated holiday greetings were a staple of the early twentieth-century postcard boom, when millions of Christmas cards were exchanged, many printed in Germany by chromolithography.
