Mardi Gras crowd on Canal Street, New Orleans, LA, circa 1937

About this postcard

An elevated view looks down on Canal Street during Mardi Gras, where a dense crowd fills the broad thoroughfare between tall commercial buildings and flags. Canal Street is the "animated dividing line between the old city and the new," and at Mardi Gras its terrazzo marble pavement disappears beneath the feet of festive throngs gathered from across America. The street has long separated the French Quarter from the American sector, and the caption's phrase "Human Paving" captures the packed scene.
