About this postcard
The Marines' Memorial Club occupies a corner on Sutter Street, a tall brick building with arched top-floor windows, a small corner bay, and awnings over the ground level. The view looks down on cars lining the street, with signs for Arthur Murray, Ford, and Coca-Cola on neighboring buildings. The club opened on November 10, 1946, the Marine Corps' 171st birthday, as a tribute to Marines who had gone before and a home base for members of the armed forces. The writer, Claire Penning, stayed there on a week's leave in 1966 and used it as a base for sightseeing that took in Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, the cable cars, and Muir Woods.
